Complete Android Release for The Great Ace Attorney!

Complete Android Release for The Great Ace Attorney!

Hey boys and girls, we’re back with the mobile release. Sorry again for the delay; we’ve taken some measures to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

If you happen to already have IrisMobile and the previous Android release installed, just open IrisMobile and it should prompt you to update.
If you don’t have the Android release yet, check the Buying Guide link to get started; after you finish buying the game, a link to the patch itself is at the bottom of that page, along with further instructions. This DOES work on Android emulators for PC like BlueStacks! See the IrisMobile page for more info on that.

Some sidenotes and near-future plans

  • Yes, the plans for the English dub are on track. More info very soonβ„’, in its own post.
  • There’s a big demand for retranslating our translation into other languages. We dig that, but we want the translation to stabilize before we open it up. This means waiting for feedback from our users and for the rewrite that started some time ago to finish. We’ll let you know when we’re ready.

But wait, there’s more!

The 3DS demo for The Great Ace Attorney 2 – The Resolve of Ryuunosuke Naruhodou is now released, as well. It requires the original Japanese demo to be installed. Unfortunately, there is no such demo for the Android version of the game. But if all goes well, it won’t be long before both 3DS and Android players have something to sink their teeth into, if you catch my drift.

  1. If the game ends up not working, and we get the refund for our money, that money can only be used on the japanese google play?

    1. I think so, unfortunately. Personally, I used my credit card, but this is more difficult and doesn’t work with all cards.

  2. I just wanted to let all of you know, that I’m extremely thankful for this English patch.

I’ve been excited to play DGS since the original trailer first dropped all those years ago. I was devestated once I learned that it probably wouldn’t get an English release…

But, then I learned the other day that the game was fully translated! I played through cases 1-4 and was very impressed with how fantastic the translation is! (And pretty easy to patch, too)

So seriously, thank you so much for all of your amazing work on this! This was WELL worth the wait! I look forward to playing the 5th case tomorrow.

  3. Hi, I keep getting an error saying “Unfortunately, Iris Mobile has stopped” every time I’m in the middle of downloading the Video OBB Patch. Is there a fix for this? I’m using the emulator Nox Player.

  4. If i already have the dai gyakuten 2 game can I apply the demo patch on this or do i need the demo?

  5. Any tips on how to acquire the demo on my EU 3DS? Or is it impossible and should I wait for the full translation?

    1. No official way, sorry. It seems that downloading demos with unofficial eShop clones still works, but I’ve been told I cannot help with this for legal reasons. For this reason, the DGS2 demo is officially only for people with a Japanese 3DS system. But the actual DGS2-1 shouldn’t be too long off…

      1. Ah I see, well I might look into a few other eShop clones then. If I can’t find anything then I’ll just take solace in that 2-1 isn’t too far off!! Thank you for the reply!

  6. Play-asia is for some reason refunding my purchases (money go through paypal, but it gets refunded after ~15 minutes) and Codeshop won’t accept my Greek Mastercard.

What can I do pls HALP <3

    1. Others seemed to have more success with SeaGamer or Offgamer. I used my credit card directly myself, but you need a Japanese address for that and it will take a few tries to work (and it will not work with all cards it seems – it seems you have to wait for an authorization charge from Google to go through before you card can be used).

  7. I only need the Irismobile app when installing the newest patch on Android right? I’m just kinda unsure since it says an update is available even when I’ve installed the translated app. ( “AKP Patch: Update available” is an example of what the app says).

  8. Awesome, thanks! DGS 1 was amazing, and the quality of the translation was perfect. πŸ˜€
I’m sure you’ve answered this elsewhere, but are there any plans to translate the dlc for DGS1, or only for DGS2?

    1. DGS2 has the priority and the DLC is only available for 3DS. The DGS2 DLC is actually interesting unlike the DGS1 DLC, but there is no legit way to get the DLC without a Japanese 3DS (or a region changed one, which is difficult and you lose previous purchases). We’ll explore ways of doing this, but no promises.

  9. I’ve had trouble getting the JP Google Play card to purchase DGS through the options you guys put in, but I did find another way to get it:

    1. Join OffGamers.com (best if you use the same google account you made to access the JP Google Play Store) and search for Google Play Gift Card (JP)

    2. Use PayPal to purchase the card if you have one, or use PayPal guest checkout, I’ve heard that works.

    3. The code will be sent to the JP Google account email in the form of a link that goes to your purchase receipt (something like [OffGamers] Order Update #********).

    4. Login to Shasso (it’s the same as OffGamers)

    5. It’ll take you the the Order Detail screen, scroll down until you see Game Code and your card will be there. Just take that code and redeem it in JP Google Plat, it’s legit πŸ˜€

    5. And there you have your money! Have fun being able to buy DGS.

  10. Releasing a patch for a demo that cannot be downloaded unless you have a Japanese 3DS is cruel.

    1. Sorry, we asked someone more knowledgeable in law if there’s any way we could provide it as-is for users, since it’s just a demo but we were told that would be illegal. We want to keep this operation legal and stay on Capcom’s good side lest they shut us down before we’re finished. There are ways to get the demo, but unfortunately, we cannot help you with that. Sorry πŸ™

  11. Oh gosh, I hope you guys know how amazing you all are for producing such a gorgeous translation!

It’s still hard for me to wrap my brain around the fact that this isn’t official Capcom stuff.

Thank you so much for all of your hard work!!!

  12. You guys are the absolute greatest. Thanks a million. πŸ˜‰

Twill look forward to AAI2 and DGS2 on Android whenever you get there. πŸ˜‰

  13. I’d like to reiterate my appreciation on what you’ve done for the community. I look forward to eventually playing the game myself. However, concern over the use of a slur to illustrate racism among several characters has cropped up here and there. I’m sure this choice had careful thought behind it, but there are many who consider such a harsh word unnecessary. Is there a chance to discuss and/or re-evaluate this issue?

    1. Thanks, I do hope you’ll get the chance to play the game soon and draw your own conclusions instead of relying on the word of others. This is certainly not the right forum to discuss an issue as serious as racism in a way that does it justice, but let me just briefly summarise our view on the matter. Racism is ugly and it should make you feel bad when you encounter it. It’s unfair, it’s baseless and it has no logic to it. Sweeping it under the rug, “softening” it or removing it entirely does not help anyone. It may make some people feel less guilty or it may not rattle people if we toned it down, but that would be unethical. We feel that we captured the tone of the original version well in our translation and we do think that we did the right thing here. You may or may not agree with that – and that’s fine. If you want to further discuss this, you may DM me on Discord: uwabami#6413

      1. I’m personally a believer that you don’t censor history and for that, I don’t think it should be removed.

    2. I think they were right in keeping true to the translation. It wouldn’t really be right of them to change this or that due to their own personal preferences.

As for the racism in the game, you have to remember this is more back in the day, when foreigners in a new country are something new.

  14. Thank you so much for this! You don’t realize the work put into it until you play the game itself. Not just the text and naming of items. There’s sooo much to translate and change.

Dunno if it matters, but I ran into a glitch. At the beginning of case 3, after the “written” introduction, and before the video, the game just stayed black and froze. Had to restart and it worked. Dunno if this is a common bug or not though.

    1. I’m not part of the team but I have reported this bug before and it turns out that it is a decently common bug and is related to the amount of RAM your phone has left. Also, I don’t know if this still holds true, but when I reported it they said that the only fix they have at the moment is to restart the game and well, you already know that. Again, I know I’m not fully qualified to talk about this and it is possible that they have found a fix but I hope my answer was helpful.

  15. So many Thanks for your titanic work!!!!

Just one more thing: any plans for translating the Randst Magazine DLC shorts?)

    Thank you again!

  16. Thank you for your hard work!

I got a minor issue with the latest patch on Android, not a gamebreaking one but irritating. Before the game used up all screen space on my Samsung S8 but now there’s a small empty space to the left when when holding the phone horizontally. It appears on the main menu (after the Scarlet Study logo) and during normal gameplay. Cutscenes uses up the full screen as it should be. Is there any fix for this?

    All the best.

      1. Yes, it’s the exact same issue. Sorry for the inconvienience πŸ™‚

Seeing as there’s already an issue opened I’ll just eagerly await further news. Thanks!

        1. So I’ve been following for some weeks now and it seems like this empty space/border stuff was intended on your part which feels kinda strange as the unpatched game uses up the whole screen and patches before 2.4.0 didn’t have this. Nonetheless if there are no plans on reverting this change, is it possible to atleast center the game screen and have both sides equally empty? Having the game screen shifted to the right is frankly a horrible user experience and kept me from finishing DGS…

          1. The unpatched game does not use the whole screen, nor is it intended to by CAPCOM (not us). The reason is that the original aspect ratio of the 3DS game has to be preserved, they do the same thing in Dual Destinies, Spirit of Justice and in the iOS versions. We’re looking into different options into fixing this (our current attempt fixed it for some people, but not for everyone), but it would be much better if CAPCOM just updated the game upstream…

  17. You guys are amazing! Like seriously the Scarlet Study team works so hard to create these translations. I honestly didn’t expect the DGS 2 Demo to be released this fast. I have nothing but the utmost respect for you guys and thank you guys for your continued work, and I look forward to the DGS 2 releases! πŸ™‚

  18. I really want to play this game but play asia is out of stock on the gift cards. The other too websites (offgamer and seagamer) look shady with lots of fake reviews. Should i wait for a restocking on playasia or is there anywhere else?

    1. I bought two gift cards from seagamer (with Paypal so I could cancel if they duped me) and both worked fine for me. But I agree the site looks quite shady, haven’t had any troubles with them yet though.

    1. I bought Google Play gift cards a few days ago from OffGamers and the only issue is my VISA card didn’t work, and while I managed to pay with Paypal I had to wait for someone to approve my payment (less than one day).
Then I got the the gift card codes, in picture form (scanned from the cards I guess).

So I guess it works and it’s cheaper than from Play Asia.

However I think they are out of stock for now. Probably too many people wanting to play this game! :p

        1. Nice, we managed to cause all of the stores to be sold out temporarily πŸ™‚ DGS1 was even #1 in purchased apps in the Japanese PlayStore for a short while.

  19. Fantastic patch. I can’t imagine the hard work that went into this! I plan on making a video review of this game once I have completed it.

Quick question though, and spoilers for anyone reading this but I’d like to report an issue with the patch. During the second day of investigation, my game seems to lock up with a black screen after Holmes is shot and a policeman shows up so you can take him to the crime scene. My guess is that there’s supposed to be a pre rendered cutscene there since the UI fades away as this happens. Any idea on what this could be or what would fix this so I can continue playing? Thanks again for all your hard work!

  20. Nice! I’ll give this a shot soon! Thanks for all your hard work!

Will keep an eye on whatever dub auditions you have too.

  21. Just started playing it yesterday thanks to you guys! Amazing work! Is there a way to support you guys?

  22. So glad to see this is available! Would you be able to create an instruction guide as to how to install this on bluestacks? Does it differ from the purchase and install methods from using an android?

    1. It’s the same, our guide should work for Bluestacks. If you hit a wall, you can hit us up on Discord for support. Link is on our Contact page πŸ™‚

  23. I just beat the first game on 3ds and I’m beyond thrilled, thank you for this labor of love! Given how quality this first release was my heart can’t take the wait for a full DGS2 translation!

  24. Hi. I don’t know if you guys can help me with this but maybe another persons perspective can tell me what is wrong.
I followed all your guides using the Bluestacks help and everything works fine, but Bluestacks itself stutters alot and I wasn’t enjoying playing the game like that, so I decided to do all the steps again but this time on my tablet.
The problem is that when I log onto the account where I purchased the game on, it asks me to pay for it again and it doesn’t show up on my purchase history.
Finding that odd I went back to Bluestacks and entering the Playstore there I don’t need to pay and the game shows up in the purchase history.
Google says that purchased apps should show up on other devices as long as I’m logged in with the account I made the purchase with.
Sorry for bothering you but I’m just trying to see if anyone can help me with this situation. Either way thanks for all your hard work and for giving us Ace Attorney fans a way to play this game.

      1. Yes but when I go to game’s page it asks me to pay for it again. I only seem to be able to download it on Bluestacks.

        1. That shouldn’t happen, I’m able to play on my phone and on Bluestacks. Can you try removing your main account (you can add it again later) to see if that helps?

          1. It turned out to be a stupid mistake on my part.
I forgot I already add a previous japanese Googleplay account and I mixed both up (bought the game in one and was trying to download it on the other).
Sorry for bothering you and thanks for trying to help me.
Good luck on DGS2 and I hope everything goes according to your plans.
            Thanks.

  25. Hi, I have a problem. I followed all the steps to purchasing a genuine copy that you detailed, and finally installed the translation with the IrisMobile thingy, but I keep getting an alert that says

    “License Error

Can’t confirm your purchase with this Google account. Please log into the Google account you bought this game with and try again.”

I do not know exactly what this means.

I went into my Google Play app and switched to the Japanese account I made with your help, and nothing happened.

Then I went into my settings, selected Google, then selected Google Account, and selected my Japanese account from the drop down menu and tried again to open the game, and nothing happened.

Then, in my settings, I selected Google again, but this time I went to Play Games, made a username using the Japanese account, then tried opening the game again and still nothing happened.

Lastly, in my settings, I selected Google, but went to Google Play Instant, and selected my Japanese account as my Google Play Instant account. Opening the game did nothing yet again.

I have no idea what to do to solve this problem. I have a legal copy of the game but it somehow isn’t recognizing it. Can anyone help?

    1. What happened to you is most likely the automatic refund that happens when you uninstall an app within a short time of buying it (as mentioned on the IrisMobile page). Uninstalling is part of the patching process in IrisMobile. To fix this, please remove the patch with IrisMobile, then uninstall the game, then buy it again, then patch it again. You won’t lose any money in the process, because you were refunded when this happened. You should also have an email about this in your Japanese account. This only happens once, so after you buy it for the second time, you’re set.

      1. Thank you so much! I thought the refund wasn’t the problem because I thought I waited a long enough time, but I guess I only waited something like 12 or 14 minutes or something. It really does have to be exactly 15 minutes or longer.

Took a while to respond to you because it takes a long time to reinstall the game, but yes, I can confirm this worked, thank you!

  26. Android version, purchased in jpn google play store seems to work fine on samsung s8, android ver 8.0. No crashes so far.

Huge thank you to scarlet study team. You guys are unsung heroes of ace attorney community πŸ™‚

  27. So I noticed in this post and the previous one that there is a rewrite going on
Why is the rewrite changing and how far along is it coming? I’m debating whether to wait for it or jump straight into the current release

    1. The rewrite consists of our translators going through the script again to make it sound more natural and more in-character. The first two episodes needed this the most, but it’s not like they’re unplayable.

  28. Huge ‘Thank You!’ to the Scarlet Study team.

Does anyone know how to get the game onto Bluestacks, does it need to be purchased through the Google Play Japanese website and downloaded and installed that way, or does it need to be purchased on a device and moved from the device and installed?

  29. Thank you guys so much for your service to non-Japanese AA fans. I’m stoked to play DGS2 when you guys are done! This fandom always impresses with it’s ability to put out localizations that feel official in pretty much every capacity. Everyone on the Great Ace Attorney team deserves immense praise for their work!

  30. I had difficulties connecting to the Japanese Google Play store (had to look up additional help to do it), but I think they only managed to detect that I could access the Japanese store once I redeemed my 3000 yen gift card. So there’s that — just mentioning in case anyone has difficulty with this

  31. I played episode 1 last night and I am amazed at your work. Everything feels like Ace Attorney! Thankyou very much for putting your effort into this! I see the effort!

  32. Note that you need to be online to start the Android version of the game, which can be very inconvenient if you can’t get connected. I would have gone with the 3ds version if I had realized this was the case, haha.

    This translation is amazing though!

  33. Hello

After having finished this game I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. This was an impressive ride and the translation is top notch. This game is a major installment in the franchise and a jewel of a videogame. You really honoured its story and pace with your work, and I’m glad I had the chance to experiment it.

I’m getting shivers just thinking that the second opus is known to surpass it. Already can’t wait for future updates while I non-stop play the OST !

    Thanks again for your work

  34. Huge thank you for this translation!

My phone got stolen last week as i had already played the first three episodes. I now got another phone and managed to reinstall the game, but i lost all my progress.
Is there a way to get and import an already saved data, so i could start directly from episode 4?
The ones listed in the Download page (under 3DS) don’t work, it says the data files are corrupted and it just erases them and starts anew.

Hope you can help me? πŸ™

    1. I’m sorry to hear about your phone. The 3DS saves won’t work, but if you save once in the mobile version, all Episodes will be unlocked. This works for all mobile versions of 3D Ace Attorney games πŸ™‚

  35. Quick question about the dub is there going to be a half english dub like for example, in the first episode all characters will speak in japanese but in the later episodes they’ll speak english?

  36. Hi, just want to say thank you for the translation. I never thought I will be playing this game and I am quite glad that Capcom decided to make TGAA available on Android since I don’t want to risk modding my 3DS. I only discovered the translation but I heard high praises from your work so I am looking forward to playing this. πŸ˜€
Can’t wait for your translation on TGAA 2.

  37. Hey guys, just finished the game and wanted to thank you so much for the work you’ve done. I’m a longtime fan of Ryukishi07’s visual novels (Higurashi, Umineko, Rose Guns Days) and the service that groups like yours do in providing high quality English translations is absolutely amazing.

I can only imagine that one or many of you on your team felt the same frustration as many other Ace Attorney fans when we waited and waited but never received word of DGS coming to the West. I really enjoyed Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice, but, having played Great Ace Attorney, you can distinctly tell the difference between a work written by Shu Takumi and a game made to sell worldwide copies on brand recognition.

Your translation was fabulous (some of the last scenes in the game actually made me cry), the way you’ve streamlined the process is so convenient and the fact that you go out of your way to ensure that people legitimately purchase the game is incredibly respectable. I know none of you, but the fact that you have all poured in so much time and dedication for the good of the Ace Attorney community means that you are all amazing people, and heroes that we don’t deserve.

My fiancee and I have now both finished the game, and we are beside ourselves with excitement to play DGS2. We’re having fun theorizing about all sorts of things and it’s all thanks to you. I hope anyone who has spent countless hours working on this project will read this comment and know how impactful your work is. I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels this immense gratitude, so on behalf of us all- thank you.

  38. Thank you guys… Is there a way for us to donate? I’m a vivd Ace attorney fan and just recently, I am playing the fan translation. You guys are doing an amazing job. I wish there’s a way to support you guys in some way, and donations are the only thing that comes to mind..

Without your efforts, the fans wouldn’t play this masterpiece. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

    1. You mean the release of DGS2-1? It’s been translated for a while now, but not yet released…

  39. I only discovered this site’s existence two days ago. Got the games purchased and Game 1 patch installed yesterday. Completed it literally seconds ago. And as the Foreman, I can say without a doubt that the jury’s verdict is clear:

This translation brings tears of joy to my eyes. It feels so close to the actual English games that I genuinely forgot it was an unofficial translation at times.

As someone who has an actual disability involving language, I have no hope of ever understanding a foreign language. So with Capcom obviously not planning to translate this game, it would have been impossible for me to enjoy this amazing title – with its amazing take on Detective Holmes, its insight into Anglo-Japanese politics and its fiendishly intriguing puzzles – if not for your assistance.

Thank you. I eagerly await the release of the second game so I can delve deeper into this world!

  40. Are you currently working on DGS2 Android version right now or are you still working on the 3DS version?

  41. Thanks for this omg, i’ll gladly pay for this patch and all of the hard work with it, I love this game series and you for giving us a change to play this πŸ™

  42. If you get hung up on the phone number (I did) Japanese mobile phones are a 3 digit area code and an 8 digit number, example: 090 1234 5678

  43. Amazing translation and loved playing through it! Super supportive of and grateful for all the work you’ve done and are doing! Bought a copy of DGS2 ready for the patch back in April and checking this daily in case it gets released xD. Are you going to be releasing it in chunks like DGS1 or as a whole game, and do we have a rough timeframe? Not impatient at all, I know it will be worth the wait, but VERY excited lol

  44. I have a lot of patience and will wait for the entire translation of DGS2 before playing it. πŸ™‚ In the meantime, it is good to see the team is still together and working. One foot in front of the other!

You are inspirations and thank you for the kind of great work you should have been hired and paid to do. Not many have the luxury of working on these things in their free time — I personally work two full time jobs… capitalism is an unfair mistress — and so you deserve great respect for committing.

Thank you again for your work.

  45. hello! I’d just like to ask, are there any plans to translate the 2 DLC cases in DGS2? I’d really love to see lpers react to them

  46. Getting a crash on episode 5, investigation 2, Holmes room when speaking to Holmes about the “music on disc”. Tried few times but couldn’t get past that part of the game. Anybody knows where to report bugs for the android version of translation.

  47. Just finished the game! Really great translation, especially the slang! Thank you very much for your hard work! Really looking forward to the next part!
